As Leon sat on the beaches of the city, a man approached him with a letter a seal in the shape of Volkner's badge. Upon opening, the letter read:
"Leon Gray, you have been invited to challenge Volkner at the Sunyshore Gym upon completion of this city's Gym Challenge."
Upon arrival and entering the gym, Volkner stands in the center of the battle area, a handful of spectators sitting in the bleachers off to either side. Arms crossed, stance wide, and brows furrowed, he watches Leon enter the gym as if calculating his every mood. There is a hint of... disappointment, behind his eyes, proving his reputation of being not so easily impressed and excited more. Once Leon stands in place, he nods to him.
"Congrats, on completing the challenge. I appreciate the effort. You probably didn't know it even existed, but we have scouts across the city who check for those acts."
Walking to one side of the gym, he gets back to his normal stance and gestures to the Pokeballs on his belt. "In Gyms, the challenger chooses their Pokémon first. Then I will. It's just the way it is. I'm gonna guess this is your first go-around at the challenge, so let me remind you of the basics."
As he spoke, he held up his hand with the back facing Leon, counting up. "One: you may switch out Pokémon at any time, but once two of them are unfit for battle, you've lost, or I have. Two: Potions are prohibited, but any items that your Pokémon are holding are fair game."
His tone was one of exhaustion, as if he has had to say this many times before.
"And just... make it worth my time, kid. I've got a hell of a waitlist."
